Sony’s Play Station 5 is the hottest gaming console in the market today and it’s in really short supply due to Supply chain and distribution disruption due to COVID-19.
The product is not easily available in New Zealand markets at the moment. All retail stores and gaming outlets such as EB GAMES are waiting for stock to arrive. As such they are only taking pre-orders or asking customers to join waiting list.
One can imagine this is a perfect opportunity for Scammers to target people who desperately want to get their hands on PS5.
We have had several elderly people notify us that they have been scammed while trying to get Play Station 5 for their Grand kids during the Christmas holidays.
There are genuine sellers selling PS5 on Trade me and Marketplace at a highly inflated price but also there are several scammers present on marketplace.
We would suggest staying away from buyers on marketplace unless you can meet the seller in person and pick up the items and pay on pickup. The prices on TradeMe are inflated but its by far your best bet to get an actual Play Station as there are more genuine sellers on TradeMe with genuine ratings and their profile have been cleared by TradeMe Team. Always check the seller’s rating and other listings to determine if its a new member with no trade history or a genuine seller
Please share this post with family and friends especially elderly as they are more likely to fall for such scams when buying a present for a family member.
