We have covered this scam in the past but we think there is a need to remind kiwis again of this scam as more and more people are being targeted by this scam.
People are increasingly leaning towards online shopping and especially since COVID pandemic there has been a rise in online shopping especially from overseas websites or sources. After speaking with several people who have fallen for this scam and have reported this it is our understanding that since there has been a delay in shipping times due to COVID especially for packages arriving from overseas some people believe it to be genuine message from Courier Company.
Once you click the link you will be redirected to a page asking for a VERY LOW and reasonable sounding customs fee ranging from $2-$40 and one would be reassured that this is genuine customs process. However the scammers are not after that particular amount and are more interested in getting the credit card details you enter to pay these Supposedly custom charges.
Please do not click or send your personal or credit card information through such scam texts.
If you are concerned for your package and are waiting always look up the progress through the tracking number provided. Most companies provide tracking number these days. Also most packages shipped from overseas and from trusted websites include GST in the checkout amount. Depending on the amount and the type of item shipped there might be no customs payable on your package. And if custom duty is payable you will always be contacted by phone or email by Courier Company who will provide you VERY SPECIFIC details about the origin of the parcel and the destination of the parcel.
Please share this post with family and friends and together lets beat this courier scam.
